Shifting Gear Design, Innovation and the Australian Car, VIC

National Gallery of Victoria, Ground Level, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne

10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

In a first for an Australian art institution, the National Gallery of Victoria hosts an exhibition of cars in 2015. Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car presents some of our most iconic vehicles as objects of art and design. This exhibition celebrates Australia’s important and proud history of automobile design and engineering and reflects on the heyday of the Australian car industry. It also looks to the future of the automobile industry in this country and the shift from manufacturing, which has primarily serviced a local market, to being a global contributor through specialist expertise.

Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car traces the development of the family car from its earliest form, as a steam-powered ‘horseless carriage’, through to its present-day role as a major design object and highly refined and efficient means of transport. It presents the stories behind the development of some of the great Australian vehicles and reveals the designers who styled them. It also considers the significant contribution Australian designers and engineers have made, and continue to make, to the car industry through specialist design capacity and expert knowledge.

Historic Motor Vehicle Gathering, SA

Park 23, western side of Anzac Highway between the Keswick Bridge and West Terrace

10:30 AM - 3:00 PM

More than 100 veteran and vintage cars, trucks and motorcycles will converge on the Adelaide Parklands for a public display on Sunday 15th March 2015. Organised by The Vintage Sports Car Club of South Australia, the 5th annual Historic Motor Display Day is exclusively for vehicles built before 1931.

This display will give the public a chance to see just how quickly vehicles evolved in the first few decades of the past century.

Everything from spindly, single-cylinder cars and bikes well over 100 years old capable of just 40kph to large eight-cylinder, luxury vehicles from the height of the "Roaring Twenties" more than capable of mixing it with modern traffic will be on display. This is not just a great opportunity to see the history of motoring but a chance to meet and talk with the custodians of these vehicles and marvel at the development, design and grandeur of these magnificent machines.

This is also an opportunity for younger people to see 'up close and personal' relics from an era of motoring very few living people truly remember thus helping to foster and preserve an interest in the historic vehicle movement.

The vehicles will be displayed in Park 23 on the western side of Anzac Highway between the Keswick Bridge and West Terrace from 10.30am to 3.00pm.

There is no admission charge for entrants and spectators, and free parking has been arranged in a special section in the same grounds. Enter by travelling north on Anzac Highway. There will be catering on-site.

The Australia Classic series is held on public roads alongside regular traffic, keeping all road rules. Owners of expensive and beautiful classic vehicles will not have to risk their prized possessions, instead the objective is to be on time to the 100th of the second.

For the “classic class” any registered vehicle made prior to 1984 is eligible to enter. This year however the “open class” will also allow the entry of replicas, hot-rods and supercars on individual approval.
